The first step before booking your heavy vehicle licence upgrade, first check you meet the state required eligibility.
Once you are ready, you need to complete your knowledge test prior to booking in your licence upgrade.
We highly recommend completing the online practice test available prior to attempting your knowledge test.
The questions contained in the heavy vehicle knowledge tests are sourced from two publications, the ‘ACT Heavy Vehicle Handbook’ and the ‘Load Restraint Guide’, which can be purchased as a hard copy from any Access Canberra Service Centre or downloaded electronically from the buttons below.
The Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test is a computer-based test that you must pass to apply for a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) or a heavy vehicle driving test.
It's similar to the driver knowledge test (DKT) you take when going for your Learner driver licence.
If you're upgrading your heavy vehicle licence in the ACT (from Medium Rigid to Multi-Combination), you are required to complete a Commercial Driver Medical. While this medical is not required to participate in your training and assessment, it must be completed prior to lodging your licence upgrade with Access Canberra.
The Commercial Medical Assessment ensures you are medically fit to drive a heavy vehicle and aligns with national standards. It can be completed through your GP or a walk-in medical service, however, please note:
This medical is required for all initial heavy vehicle licence upgrades and at every renewal thereafter.
For more details on commercial medical requirements, visit Access Canberra.
