🚛 Course Overview

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to obtain a Medium Rigid (MR) licence, preparing drivers to safely operate larger rigid vehicles with two axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8 tonnes. Training includes effective vehicle control, hazard awareness, and practical performance under varying traffic and road conditions.

All assessments are completed by a qualified assessor approved by Access Canberra and compliant with the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) framework.

🎯 Who Should Complete This Licence Upgrade?

This course is designed for individuals who are:

  • Transitioning into a career involving public transport, school or charter bus driving
  • Employed or applying for roles with local councils, utilities, or government agencies
  • Working in construction or logistics and required to operate 2-axle tippers, water trucks, or service vehicles
  • Looking to build a long-term career in transport or freight, with future plans to progress to HR or HC licensing

To be eligible, you must:

  • Have held a Class C (car) licence for at least 12 months

(P1 time counts, but you must be on your P2 or full licence to upgrade)

  • Pass the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) – Rigid category

🚚 What You Can Drive with an MR Licence

With a Medium Rigid licence, you can drive:

  • Rigid trucks or buses with a GVM over 8 tonnes and two axles
  • Vehicles towing trailers up to 9 tonnes GVM

Common examples include:

  • School buses and route buses
  • Medium tippers and council fleet vehicles
  • Construction and water trucks
  • Mobile food or event support trucks

🧰 Career Opportunities with an MR Licence

Completing an MR licence opens the door to a variety of career pathways, including:

  • Public transport driver (e.g. Transport Canberra, CDC Canberra)
  • School bus or charter operator
  • Council or government fleet driver
  • Construction driver (tippers, sweepers, traffic support)
  • Utility or maintenance driver for electrical, civil or parks departments
  • Local freight and metro delivery driver

For many of these roles, especially in the ACT region, an MR licence is the minimum requirement.

📝 Before You Book with Beck’s

To complete your upgrade with Beck’s Transport Training:

  1. You must first pass the Rigid Vehicle Knowledge Test

ACT licence holders: Complete your DKT through Road Ready in Mitchell or Kambah. [ACT Road Ready Practice Test - Road Ready ACT Centre | Get Your Drivers Licence in Canberra]

Before commencing training or applying for your MC licence, you must complete a Commercial Vehicle Driver Medical Assessment, in accordance with Austroads Assessing Fitness to Drive standards.

This medical:

  • Must be completed by a registered general practitioner
  • Must assess your fitness to operate heavy vehicles
  • Is mandatory for all MR, HR, HC, and MC drivers (for ACT Licence Holders)

TIP: We recommend completing your medical once you have booked your course to avoid delays in licence processing. Ask us for a copy of the medical assessment form or download directly from your state authority.
