Multi Combination (mc) licence upgrade

 Unit Code: TLILIC3018
Licence Class: Multi Combination (MC)
Training Partner RTO: Ascent Training Services (RTO 88096) & DARE - DRIVER AND RIDER EDUCATION PTY LTD RTO 90431

🚛 About This Course

This course provides the advanced knowledge, skills and practical competency to obtain a Multi Combination (MC) licence, the highest class of heavy vehicle licence in Australia. It covers coupling and uncoupling of trailers and dollies, reversing multi-combination vehicles, managing heavy loads, and operating safely under diverse road and traffic conditions.

The MC upgrade is delivered under the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) framework and is assessed by an approved assessor, in accordance with Access Canberra and NSW RMS licensing standards.

🎯 Who Should Complete a Multi Combination Licence Upgrade?

This course is ideal for drivers who:

  • Hold a current HC or HR licence and are ready to take the next step in their transport career
  • Are applying for roles that involve operating B-doubles, road trains, or prime mover + dolly + low-loader trailer combinations
  • Are employed in or transitioning into interstate transport, rural bulk haulage, fuel and dangerous goods, or specialised high-capacity freight sectors

This upgrade is often required by:

  • Interstate linehaul operators
  • Bulk haulage contractors (grain, hay, fertiliser, aggregates)
  • Fuel and chemical tanker drivers (with DG accreditation)
  • Livestock transport companies operating road trains
  • National logistics fleets with B-double operations
  • Operators in mining, agriculture and heavy industry transport

🚚 What You Can Drive with an MC Licence

  • B-doubles: Prime mover towing two semi-trailers
  • Road trains: Prime mover, dolly, and two or more trailers
  • Low-loader combinations: Used in construction, mining or event logistics
  • Any vehicle combinations covered under HR or HC, plus multi trailer configurations

⚙️ Gearbox Options – Auto/Synchro vs Road Ranger

Automatic / Synchromesh Gearbox

  • Training is conducted in an automatic MC-configured vehicle
  • Ideal for fleet drivers, logistics operators, and those transitioning from HC with an auto or synchro condition
  • Results in a ‘B’ condition licence, restricting you to MC vehicles fitted with automatic or synchromesh transmissions

🛈 Beck’s currently provides MC training in automatic vehicles only. If you wish to complete your training in a Road Ranger-equipped vehicle to obtain an open (unrestricted) licence, you may do so using your own approved vehicle.

Road Ranger / Crashbox Gearbox – Unconditional (Open) Licence

  • Training must be completed in a non-synchromesh Road Ranger gearbox vehicle
  • Required for unrestricted MC licence (no 'B' condition)
  • Necessary for employers in bulk haulage, tippers, livestock and dangerous goods
  • Not currently available through Beck’s fleet vehicles

❗ Drivers without strong manual transmission experience will need extra training prior to attempting an MC Open upgrade.

📝 Licence Eligibility

To enrol in the MC course, you must:

  • Hold a current HR or HC licence for at least 12 months
  • Pass the Combination Driver Knowledge Test (DKT)

ACT licence holders: No DKT required if upgrading from HC

NSW licence holders: If your HC licence is over 3 years old, DKT is required and a learner logbook must be issued

ACT licence holders: Complete your DKT through Road Ready in Mitchell or Kambah. [ACT Road Ready Practice Test - Road Ready ACT Centre | Get Your Drivers Licence in Canberra]

NSW licence holders: Complete your DKT at your local Service NSW centre. [NSW RMS Practice Test – Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test | NSW Government]

We strongly encourage completing the official online practice test before your appointment.

🩺 Commercial Driver Medical Requirements

Before commencing training or applying for your MC licence, you must complete a Commercial Vehicle Driver Medical Assessment, in accordance with Austroads Assessing Fitness to Drive standards.

This medical:

  • Must be completed by a registered general practitioner
  • Must assess your fitness to operate heavy vehicles
  • Is mandatory for all MC drivers
  • NSW Licence holders must show proof of a completed commercial medical prior to completing the DKT

Tip: For ACT licence holders, we recommend completing your medical once you have booked your course to avoid delays in licence processing. Ask us for a copy of the medical assessment form or download directly from your state authority.

🕐 Course Duration

  • 2-day course for ACT & NSW licence holders
  • Includes up to 12 hours of training and assessment, covering:

  • Pre-operational checks and safety compliance
  • Coupling and uncoupling
  • Multi-combination reversing techniques
  • Traffic management and vehicle control
  • Final HVCBA drive assessment

📌 A valid USI (Unique Student Identifier) is required to receive certification for ACT licence upgrade.
